Bi-Nationality and Multi-Nationality - Adventages and Disadvantages

Nationalities

Most of the people of any country have one nationality; however, sometimes there are people with two, and in few cases, three nationalities. For passports and citizenship, usually, people don´t have more than three nationalities.

There are some ways to be a bi-national: Having two parents from different nationalities or having two parents from the same nationality, but being born in another country. Other way, if you live in a country for certain amount of time, you can receive the citizenship and your nationality.

My experience

In my case, I have two parents from different nationalities. This can bring, as everything, adventages and disadvantages.

For instance, my dad is Swiss, and my mom is from Mexico. I consider myself both, even if I was born in Switzerland. A lot of people disagree with me. And a lot of people recognize nationalities only by the place of birth. In my opinion, as long I have the blood of my parents and my passports I will be both.

Advantages

Traveling

The advantages of being bi-national are really great. You don't have to have two nationalities because you can always get them in different ways. But, in terms of travelling, you can have different privileges. For example, if you have a passport from Europe, you will have easier access to enter Europe. It can make your trips easier and more comfortable.

Culture

The culture is one of the biggest impacts for a multi-national person. It all is depending from where are your countries located. You can have a totally different life in on place to another. From religion to language, from education to food; everything can be totally different. It's your choice to accept those differences.

There are thousands of combinations, and every combination is unique. That is why I believe that being bi-national is important. Not only that, but it can open your mind for a lot of new things It's also the best for the future of a child.

Food

Food is part of the culture of a country. I put this apart because it's a big thing and maybe my favorite difference. Food, for a lot of people, is the key to make a connection with places or people. Maybe is not the food, but a pleasure that connect us with other things, like sports.

From tacos to pasta, the food can reflect the country, or most likely, the society of that country.

Friends

You can meet a lot of good people, and as said before, being bi-national can create many connections and being open-minded. This is very important for a good social life.

Yourself

You can decide if you want to be bi-national, only one nationality or multi-national. That is the great thing, you can be whatever you want. You only need to be willing to make some changes.

Disadvantages

Choosing your nationality

I put this as an advantage, and also as a disadvantange, because for some people choices can be hard. This one even more because it can change your future. If you have parents from different nationalities, a really hard question is "Which country do you prefer?". This is probably because you know that if you pick one, the other country will be less for you, and usually you link the country with you parent.

Childhood

Your childhood can be hard, depending from what countries you are. Some kids have tendency of bullying other kids because they are different. This can be easily solved, but it's something that happens a lot of times.

Family / Friends

As you are from different places, the most probable is that you have families and friends in different places around the world. And sometimes is harder to visit them, and that can causes some difficulties.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I want to point out that there can be other advantages and disadvantages. However, remember that you will be different than other people. And different is unique. And unique is great.
